Poor choice

Or rather, too blatant, too exact
Imagine you and your friend are both drawing pictures. You work really hard to draw a big, purple dinosaur with polka dots. It’s your special idea!

But then, your friend looks at your paper and draws the exact same purple dinosaur with the exact same polka dots.

Here is why that feels a little yucky:

  • It Steals the "Ta-da!" Moment: When you finish a drawing, you feel proud because you made it. If someone copies you, they are trying to take the "Good job!" that belongs to your hard work.
  • Your Brain Wants to Exercise: Your brain is like a muscle. When you come up with your own ideas, your brain gets stronger and smarter. If you only copy, your brain is just taking a nap!
  • We Love the "You" Version: There is only one you in the whole world. We want to see what you think and what you create. If you copy someone else, we don’t get to see your special magic.

What should you do instead?

Instead of copying, you can be inspired.

If you see your friend draw a cool sun, you don't have to draw their sun. You can say, "I like your sun! I’m going to draw a moon!" That way, you’re still friends, but you both have your own special pictures.

Would you like me to come up with a little story you can tell a child about a squirrel who tried to copy another squirrel's nut-hiding spots?
