Anybody in United States that is good for college advice and stuff?

where are you applying to? just committed to college myself
Was thinking of this list:

Safety/Targets: Penn State (Smeal), IU Kelly, Fordham, SMU, Boston College, CUNY, BYU Provo, Drexel, Babson, Villanova, U Richmond and Bentley University.
Reaches/Giga reaches: Anything else in the top20-30 list for IB recruitment. The ivies, NYU, Stanford, UVA, UT Austin, Northwestern, etc.

Ideally tho, I wanna go to Boston College

Trying to break into investment banking and eventually get into private equity. Leg lengthening doesn't come cheap yk?

Boston College is a solid target for IB (especially in NYC), and you seem to know that. these ones are also good that you mentioned:
  • Villanova, IU Kelley (Honors), Babson, and SMU (Cox) = GREAT
  • Fordham and Drexel = good (but they arent traditional targets for IB)
consider adding UNC Kenan-Flagler, Michigan Ross, or Georgetown (McDonough). for reaches, try Wharton or Stanford

PE after IB is usually based more on your deal experience and performance, not your school brand. choose a place you can network easily and access internships early (check if they help place sophomores into spring internships)

if you feel comfortable later in the year, let me know where you commit to! seems like we have potential to be going to the same college, seeing your choices 😂 ive applied to and got in to a lot of your target schools

Congrats man! Wish the best for you in years to come.

UNC, Ross, Georgetown, Wharton and Stanford are all INSANE reaches for me tho. Like I doubt I'm getting in unrealistically so I don't wanna waste my ED on those of those. But ill apply EA if possible, and if not regular decision.

I will definitely pm you where I commit, although results are probably come out in a year from now so you might have to wait a bit 😅😅

I really hope I get into BC as I think I'm actually pretty competitive for that school. How can I optimize my applications before the upcoming fall?

some schools like georgetown arent as much of a reach as they might seem, especially if youre considering BC, since their applicant profiles are pretty similar. if BC is your top choice, consider ED. to optimize your application, colleges care about leadership, extracurriculars, sports, community service, and personal impact. make sure you include everything youve been part of: clubs, j*bs, teams...and be specific about your role, responsibilities, and how long youve been involved

ask ~2 teachers who both know you well and write well to write your recommendation letters. for awards, list ANY youve received during high school: most improved, student of the month, high GPA, athlete of the week...everything counts. if youve ever taught yourself something or pursued a personal project, include that too

your college essay is a major part of your application, so take your time with it. your teachers can be a great resource for feedback. and do something meaningful over the summer. it doesnt have to be academic; just be able to write something down about what you did during the summer.

tbh i had a rather low gpa and 1300 SAT (not the best). but what really helped me stand out to colleges was my involvement. i was active in several well known clubs and programs, played 3 sports a year, and did a lot of community service. i didnt do any summer programs, but I worked 2 j*bs full time while keeping up with sports. i think my college essay and recommendations were solid, too. for most of my schools, i didnt even submit SAT scores, i just completed the SRAR instead. what also helped is that i go to a really prestigious high school, which made my lower gpa look better because colleges were aware of how difficult my school is. in a lot of applications, i was also allowed to explain any personal issues (family; mental health) that explain any low grades, which DEFINITELY helped me and probably gained a lot of pity jfl. the rest of my application let the colleges know i wasnt stupid, and i ended up with a full ride scholarship anyways

that said, college admissions can be unpredictable. For example, my sister never did a single club, sport, or community service activity. She didn’t take the SAT or any APs, but she still had a 4.0 unweighted GPA, and she got into every single school she applied to, including a lot of the ones on your list. in her case, grades were everything. for me, it was the extracurriculars that made the difference

sorry for the long message lol

you guys are smart i had a 2.5 gpa when i graduated last year

i have no extracurriculars except i did a usaco thing
what should i do?
add that in, if you have any award (like the random ones that hand out at the end of the year) add that in.

if this is really all you have and you arent confident in your gpa or sat, you still have recommendation letters and your essay. use those to get ahead, and maybe have an explanation for your low grades if given the opportunity, which usually they will give you. visit the school and SHOW demonstrated interest, that is extremely important. do interviews with admissions, go to seminars, etc. (important for you too @ricecelthegoat , send hella emails introducing yourself and ASK to do an interview)

community college is still great! you can graduate there, or grind it out and transfer to your dream school later :)

bro the way things r heading im prolly going to community :/
Transfer to a higher ranked school. Idk if you know who he is but eric ou on Instagram (asian) went to community college and transferred to USC which is like the top public school in the world.

GPA and SAT makes up like most of the application tho. Thats what gets you in the door for admissions, ECs and the rest are what gets you in the school itself.

yeah i guess youre right. maybe im just different because the higher schools i applied to didnt even see my sat score and probably didnt like my gpa, yet i was still accepted.

WTF? Did you start a nonprofit or something? What race are you

If you're a minority the application process is 10x easier, as an asian male its like trying to LTR on tinder as a 5'3 subhuman.

Cope. They removed affirmative actuon n***a
Oh thats good. But still it doesnt make it easier for non minorites, it just makes it harder for minorites that used to get free admissions to ivies and all the IB feeder schools.

You make it sound like they just admit any non-whites, no matter the qualifications

Not non whites. Minorities. Pacific Islanders. Native Americans. African Americans. Ive seen some of these kids take up my investment bank feeder spots at HYPSM just to get the most useless degree ever. Their stats arent even good, only get in because the colleges need to fill their diversity quota and through affirmation action.

Racial quotas are literally illegal in the states

This is so cool! I recently committed to one of the schools on your list, so let me tell you everything that I did and regret not doing.
For starters: My school doesn’t have “rankings” as per se, but we do have honor roll students and I was one of them. My GPA is a 4.2 (we don’t have an unweighted option) and I filled my schedule with classes that completed general education requirements earlier so I believe that may have helped my application stand out.
Tip one: BE INVOLVED!!! You can not just focus on your academics, because that isn’t what schools are looking for in the first place. You have to fill your outside of school life with extracurricular activities. I did swimming and ran a few clubs to give some volume to applications- and literally try anything once. Many schools offer summer internships, so do take advantage of that. Get a j*b- that will help you save for college and it’s a great thing to show that you can handle course works and your personal life altogether.
Third aspect: THE ESSAY
I think the reason many people are given a chance even in reach schools is because they write their little heart out. A great suggestion would be to write about your struggles with looks (I’m assuming this is the reason you’re originally on here) and how that gave you the head start to improving yourself. Write about something ultra niche that you care about but connect it to an overarching positive trait, your target audience is a middle aged white man who is sick and tired of reading applications. Spice it up and give them some fun content to read. It’s completely personalized to you, so don’t stress out too much but make it a fun read.
Last tip: APPLY ALL AS EARLY APPLICATION, it will give you a much higher chance to be accepted.
I’m also hoping to break into the business field, and using that I’ve gotten into every single school that I applied to. Good luck, and please let me know where you do end up going! It would be cool if we went to the same school lol

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my thread. Would you be able to review my application in full to critique where I could possibly improve?
