I heard braces can fuck up ur maxilla but i don't know how common that is and if aligners are a safer/better route

What do you mean by fucking up your maxilla?
It depends. If you mean the clear aligners, then they only work in certain conditions. They're kind of useless in most cases but I know a lot of people have benefited from it, so I'm not sure. Most people need braces. Aligners just kind of... compacts your teeth into spot, where braces pulls them into spot. That's not the best way to describe either treatment, I'm oversimplifying it for the sake of understanding, but it means if your teeth are slightly shifted then Invisalign is probably all you need. Most people need teeth pulled or have teeth shift because they're erupted teeth for example.
You would have to get a consultation for aligners and it's possible you don't even qualify for them. It might not be an option for you so you'd have to check that out first. I had to go get consulted for aligners before they told me I don't qualify and I ended up getting braces.
