The word conscious can be traced back to the Latin cōnscius (“conscious, conscious of guilt”). Cōnscius = con (form of com; “together, with”) + scīre (“to know”) + the suffix us. Scio is derivative of the Proto-Indo-European *skey (“to distinguish, dissect”), which is related to the Latin signum (“sign”).

The word n****r derives from the Latin word niger(meaning "black") and the Spanish/French word negro or nègre, which were once neutral descriptors for Black people. The term transitioned from a descriptor to a virulent slur in the early 19th century in the United States, becoming deeply tied to the context of American slavery and racial hierarchy.
