What is Cortisol?
Cortisol is a hormone just like any other hormone in our body, it is a steroid hormone though. Cortisol is made by two adrenal glands located on top of each kidney. When you feel stressed, your body releases more cortisol into your bloodstream to awaken the body. Having the right cortisol balance is important for your health. Producing too much or too little cortisol can cause health problems, so it's bad to have either too much of it or too little of it.

How do we decrease cortisol?
There are a number of many ways to decrease cortisol and stress in general. These ways include eating a whole food diet which excludes unhealthy things such as sugar and other junk food. Supplements can help as well as deep breathing. Caffeine also increases cortisol so it's best to reduce your intake of caffeine as well. Other ways to reduce cortisol in the body include: getting better sleep, exercising regularly, writing in a journal, indulging on hobbies which would take your mind away from stress, going outside and forgetting about stress.

Supplements to lower cortisol
Some supplements that can help in reducing cortisol include but are not limited to: ashwagandha, magnesium, vitamin C, omega 3 fatty acids, rosea, L-Theanine. These can help reduce the cortisol released in your body and aid in fighting it.

Signs of excess cortisol
Signs of excess cortisol include:
- Weight gain
- Stretch marks on skin
- high blood sugar
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Bad immune system

Cortisol deficiency
Too much cortisol is bad for you, but too little cortisol can have equally severe effects on your body and well-being. A deficiency of cortisol can be caused by disorders of the pituitary gland or Addison’s disease. Symptoms of a cortisol deficiency can include:
- Fatigue
- Dizziness
- Loss in weight
- Blood pressure being low
- Depression
- Scars and skin folds
