What is serotonin?
Serotonin is a hormone in our body, which just like other hormones such as dopamine and cortisol, helps or shapes our mood for the rest of the day in some way. Serotonin regulates various activities, including behavior, mood, memory, and gastrointestinal homeostasis. Although serotonin is manufactured in the brain, where it performs its primary functions, some 90% of our serotonin supply is found in the digestive tract and in blood platelets.

How do we max it out?
There are three ways to boost serotonin but pretty much the most effective way to boost serotonin that I know of is through exercise. 30 minutes of walking can boost serotonin and will force your brain to release lots of them into your body, thus influencing your mood and happiness for the rest of the day.

How to know if your serotonin levels are low
Low levels of serotonin may be associated with many health conditions including: depression, anxiety and sleep problems.

Can food help boost serotonin?
Yes, some foods such as salmon, chicken, eggs, spinach, seeds and nuts can help boost serotonin. Milk also can help boost serotonin levels naturally.

Do men and women have the same amount of serotonin?
Studies show that men do have slightly more serotonin than women, but the difference is thought to be negligible. Interestingly, however, a study published in September 2007 in a journal showed there might be a huge difference in how men and women react to a reduction in serotonin, and that may be one reason why women suffer from depression far more than men.

Random facts about serotonin
- It helps control mood, memory, sleep and cognition
- It's produced in the brain and gut
- Serotonin syndrome leads to diarrhea, muscle rigidity, fever and seizures
- Too little serotonin leads to aggression, depression and insomnia (damn)
- Smiling also boosts serotonin (also damn)
