These are two different things though because you also have to realize any average woman has plenty of options in partners, but an average man has nearly zero or none at all. Also women naturally look to marry up whereas men are generally content with a stable, loyal partner who treats them well, regardless of her social status. So it does depend on the gender because each are wired with different psychology, and we've seen this though out the entirety of man kind.

If you take a quick look at all the options women have available, very few are men of good heart, and therefore, bad options. You do make a decent argument, however You are confusing a woman's desire for safety with her standard for who qualifies to provide it. A man's evolutionary drive to mate doesn't give him the actual options to do so, women hold the absolute power of selection. Also You are judging the entire dating market based on your personal friend group and the people you know which contradicts what you said about people in the communities im in.

In high school and college hypergamy is much more true than after those.
A woman would much more rather sit in a nice house with a 6+ than be poor with 7/8 or even 9+ though it's unlikely anything 8+ would be poor although not impossible (using test score ratings here, might all be lower based on bell curve rating).
Much of the looksmaxxing community seems to have come out of high school/college based individuals (though LM'ing is still a very real and valid philosophy).
