In 1933, the Reichstag passed the Enabling Act, which allowed the German Ministry of the Interior to dissolve Freemasonry in 1934. The Nazis also confiscated the property of Masonic lodges and prohibited former members from holding office in the Nazi party or public service.
Spain
After coming to power, General Franco passed legislation outlawing Freemasonry. The Spanish Falange seized the Masonic Temple of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the largest Masonic center in Spain at the time. Many Freemasons were tried, imprisoned, exiled, or executed, and their property was seized.
Italy
In 1925, Benito Mussolini dissolved Freemasonry in Italy, claiming it was a political organization with anti-religious influence. The Catholic Church also opposed Freemasonry, and the Pope declared that Catholics who joined Masonic associations were in a state of grave sin.
