Patience is mainly a physical reaction. Once you control the physical element, you'll naturally be more patient.
The 'physical' acts of patience would be, just as an example, to not get angry at someone for doing something incorrect, or allowing yourself to remain calm when you're starting to get annoyed the line for the grocery store is taking a long time. It's about reducing the act of complaining and reducing the external validation you get by reacting. You react in that manner because it rewards something in your brain, so you would replace that reward with a neutral outcome instead.
When people say 'do nothing', this is probably what they're referring to.
