How do you live life if everything around you is just terrible?

just make it not horrible

When everything around you feels terrible, the first step is to stop trying to force happiness or meaning—right now, surviving is enough. Shrink life into manageable pieces: focus on the next small task, the next few hours, instead of the overwhelming big picture. Accept that feeling numb or detached can help you cope, but don’t try to erase all emotion, just control it. Find one small anchor—something stable or predictable, like a routine, a hobby, or even just getting out of bed—that keeps you grounded. Life doesn’t have to feel good to keep moving; sometimes just making it through, step by step, is the only meaningful act.
