Americans used to call Japanese soldiers that way during ww2 and then Vietnamese communist soldiers in Vietnam as well
apparently it originated during the Korean war cause Koreans would call the American soldiers "guk" or something like that and the American soldiers started to call the koreans g**k and later it was used as a slur on Filipinos during the American phillipines war
it was Korea not Japan
