I've heard this a lot in other stories from other people, where a group of people laugh nearby and you think that they were laughing at you. Honestly I think it's just low self esteem causing your mind to zoom in on the worst explanation. I don't think people are that needlessly cruel. Maybe one of them told a funny joke and that's why they laughed.
