They have greatly increased the life expectancy of those of us who live in 'advanced' countries, but they have also destabilized society, led to psychological suffering, created a pernicious form of economic inequality, and made life unfulfilling. In the past, people were born into a world with a meaning that was given to them by society; now, however, people must create their own meaning, and many are unable to do so. It has led to widespread alienation and a lack of purpose in life. The Industrial Revolution has also greatly increased the power of the state and the corporations, which have become more oppressive and intrusive.
