You gotta take things by the balls and go up to people yourself. I remember me just sitting around in class would easily make me a target. You can't be idle. Or a "quiet kid". You gotta go talk to people yourself and risk putting them in an "uncomfortable situation" instead of letting them think you're a weirdo and thus start socially attacking you.

Tides will rise regardless of what you do, so you should have agency and "fight" instead of being swept away.
