I. Hair Care

Shiny hair comes last. To get it, you must start with a good base. Start with clean, balanced hair. Don’t let product build-up weigh your hair down or dull it.

Clarify your hair using a clarifying and/or chelating shampoo (depending on how hard your water is) to reset your hair and remove old products and outside grime. Then use a shampoo that hydrates without weighing hair down with extra oils.

If your hair is porous or naturally too alkaline (often from bleach or heat damage), you won’t get lasting shine unless you lower the pH and smooth the cuticle. A product I'd recommend is Joico K-pak Cuticle Sealer (an acidic treatment that neutralizes hair pH, helping treatments last longer, retain moisture, reduce frizz, and strengthen hair).

Always use a good sealing conditioner with defrizzing properties and silicones to lock in moisture and smooth the cuticle. Apply on wet hair, squish the conditioner into the strands, and leave on for about two minutes.

If you want to use a treatment, use a nourishing mask for extra shine and sleekness. If you want more bounce, use a hydrating mask. If your hair is damaged, make sure you get enough protein for balance.

If your hair isn’t naturally straight and you want a straight, glossy look, try specialized products. I'd recommend Kerastase Fluidéaliste Shampoo and Conditioner. They’re heat-activated but can give a “Brazilian Blowout” style without permanent damage,
keeping hair straight and shiny until your next wash.

II. Styling Care

Use leave-on products that defrizz and seal moisture but are light enough not to weigh hair down. You still want movement and shine.

If you don’t heat-style, choose a product that fights dryness, defines your hair, tames frizz, and isn’t heavy. You can finish with a little oil for shine.

If you do heat-style (even quick blow-dry), use a heat protectant to protect hair and help defrizz and seal in moisture. Pick lightweight products that still tame frizz and add shine. Heat-activated products work best with a bit of heat. A good approach is to air-dry 50-75% and finish with a blow-dry. A professional tool with ion technology (like Babyliss Pro Rapido) is ideal.

If your hair isn’t naturally straight, invest in a good leave-in with heat-activated technology for a longer-lasting result.

I'd recommend:

Redken Frizz Dismiss
Kérastase Nectar Thermique
Discipline Fluidéaliste
Moroccanoil Smooth (for dry, coarser hair)
L’Anza Trauma Treatment
Bumble&Bumble BB Straight

In very humid places, you’ll want an anti-humidity shield to stop frizz outside.

I'd recommend:

Amika The Shield (also a heat protectant)
AG Frizzproof

III. Finishing

The most polished, sleek, glossy hair is usually achieved with heat. This means using a good straightener, round brush blowout, or a blow-drying brush.

The final key to a shiny hair is a good silicone hair oil. It protects your ends, reduces frizz, and adds shine. Use a light product so you don’t weigh hair down.

I'd recommend:

Kerastase Elixir Ultime
Davines Oi Oil
Redken All Soft
Sebastian Dark Oil (for dry/coarse hair)
Verb Ghost Oil (for fine hair)
Sally’s Beauty generic oil
