as a kid i would help them whenever i had money and felt bad for them. now i ignore them most of the time and sometimes even laugh at them. why am i becoming a shitty person?

You're not. You should never give money to homeless people. The most you should ever do is call 911 if they're having a medical emergency. Maybe provide a blanket. The truth is nobody is going to starve in the West. There are free food pantries everywhere and tons of other ways to get food that they know about. When they ask people for money it's to get things they want. It's never to get things they need. If they were trying to get out of their situation they simply wouldn't have time to be asking anyone for money.

I just tell them the exact times, days of the week, and locations of all the free community meals and homeless shelters.
