It depends on how u look , if my ugly friend come to me and start showing me chads telling bro " Look at them , they are so handsome , they are so gorgeous" I would genuinely get pressed because I would assume he is doing so to cope with his own looks by downplaying me and in reply , I would say , "Nah bro they are average guys , there's nothing special" just to annoy him back

Okay , let's assume there's one friend of yours above average in looks , you never really compliment him/her but compliment attractive faces and ask for his opinions very often on that , he would genuinely assume that u are showing him that his so called above average looks are shit compared to them , that's what I assume when my friends do these things and especially those friends who never complimented on my looks not even a single time
