There are only so many things you can do to improve your overall lifestyle, no secret gatekept methods unfortunately, but I tried laying out several arguments rooted in psychology.

I was depressed for 4 years and pulled myself out of a deep hole about a year ago. I've had my share of ups and downs. But the more you learn about yourself, which cannot occur in the absence of down periods, the better changes you can make in your life.

This is what I do and what I recommend for living a satisfying life:

I. Journaling

Writing down your thoughts not only allows you to understand what your subconscious and conscious mind is feeding you, but also helps you to analyze what behavioural/thought-patterns are not doing you any good. Identify what they are, think about how you need to improve in that regard, then work on it daily.

II. Diet

Your body and your brain respond to what you put in your body. That means if you're putting shit in your body, your brain and your body are going to feel like shit all the time. Make sure to get enough essential vitamins and minerals that your body can't produce on its own such as Omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA that are found in fatty fish like salmon. Things like cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower), berries, dark chocolate, and green tea improve your long term health and have proven to be extremely effective at reducing inflammation. It's crazy how clear everything is all of a sudden after changing my diet, and how much easier it is to get things done.

III. Regular Exercise

A sedentary lifestyle causes the serotonin reward system in your brain to malfunction and fucks up your body's natural state of being. If you push your body hard and overcome challenges, your brain rewards you with serotonin (happiness chemical) and that is a key to overcoming depression. Also, the discipline and willpower you develop by exercising carries over into all other aspects of life.

>>>> IV. Meditation <<<<

Meditation is one of those things that I always had a hard time with. I could never get it done consistently until recently, and it's made a huge difference. As someone who suffers from anxiety, learning how to properly breathe (diaphragmatic breathing) has been massive. Instead of living in my head, I am now able to be fully present in every moment. Rather than being fearful of future uncertainties, I embrace uncertainty with humility accepting that nothing is real except right now. I have become more patient and compassionate with myself.

V. Setting Daily/Weekly Goals

Abondon any end goal that you think one you achieve will make you happy and think about making daily improvements. Don't worry about the destination, because the journey is what it's all about. Write down each day what it is that you want to have accomplished by the time you go to bed. Set a structure for yourself & get into a routine. That's pretty much it.
