I’m not into philosophy as im brain dead ho but when I was really struggling mentally from constantly being called out for my looks and bullied, I started researching anything that could explain why people were like this. And I found someone who basically felt like he was speaking my thoughts out loud.
Antonio Gramsci.
He made everything make sense in a way I didn’t even know I needed. His whole theory ( hegemony) is basically that what we think is “normal” or “common sense” isn’t actually natural at all its something we were taught, and we agreed to it without even realising we were agreeing.
And when I read that, it made me feel so relieved because it explained exactly why treated like this. All those comments about my looks, all the bullying, all the ways people acted like their judgments were just “facts” none of that was actually about me. It was about a system that taught them to see me a certain way. It’s so obvious but hearing it out loud just makes me feel so happy even now. ( also made me realise a lot of other things his theory wasn’t focused on looks at all but about the economy but I went from that)
It didn’t magically fix everything, but he helped me understand why I felt so broken, and why it wasn’t my fault. He made me feel less insane, less alone, less like I was the problem. He showed me that the world that hurt me wasn’t neutral it was built. And anything built can be unbuilt.
He was arrested in 1926 by Mussolini’s fascist regime and they literally said “We must stop this brain from functioning for twenty years.” But he still wrote his books from prison. He wanted us to think for ourselves. He saw it and was so smart he saved my life he wanted to save us. Unfortunately he died from illness in prison but during the time they kept trying to break his brain because he saw the truth. Like the fact they there’s proof out there that it’s not real or natural and taught makes me feel so much better.
Idk if this will help anyone but it helped me and it reminded me im not alone and there’s an actual logical explanation.
