HOW TO BAN APPEAL

A ban appeal is your chance to explain your actions, demonstrate remorse, and potentially have your ban lifted or reduced. Here's a guide to help you make a compelling appeal:
  1. Acknowledge your warnings/bans. If you feel they are unfair, then message a mod or admin. Otherwise, accept that it happened. Don’t try to deny or insult. Take responsibility.
  2. Review the rules.
  3. Don’t make an alt account. This is breaking the rules, you cannot make an alt to evade bans. If you are found out, it won’t help your case. Other people who were aware may get in trouble as well.
  4. Message one of the mods. If during your time here you managed to get somebody’s contact info on another site such as org, discord, etc., they can send it my way or you can send it directly if you have my info (my looksmax account is public).
  5. Apologize. Explain why you did what you did, and why you won’t be doing it again. Explain how the ban has impacted you, and why you want to continue using the site. Be calm and respectful.
  6. Submit an appeal that I can read. Make sure that it is clear and formatted well, not a word soup. Proofread it, and try to make sure it sticks to guidelines.
Example Appeal:

Dear Moderation Team,

I am writing to appeal my recent ban from [community name]. I understand that I violated the rules by [specific violation]. I take full responsibility for my actions and sincerely apologize for any harm or inconvenience I may have caused.

I was [explain the situation that led to the ban]. I realize now that my behavior was [explain the negative impact of your behavior]. I am truly sorry for my mistake.

I have learned from this experience and will be more mindful of the rules in the future. I am committed to being a positive and respectful member of the community.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely, [Your Username]

Obviously don’t copy this word for word and then replace what you need, I want to hear your thoughts. Also, add the date of your ban and other important details.
  1. Be patient. I am thinking after you finish refining the appeal, I will make a set date. On this date, you will be unbanned and allowed to post this as a thread. I also want to implement this date system, because people need to live out their ban.
  2. Post it in off-topic. Bonus, do a vocaroo or video of yourself reading the forum rules.
  3. If so, make it a poll thread with public votes. It will be temp. stickied, and then the user will be re-banned for the time being. (Democratic system)
  4. If the votes by the people turn out in your favor and the moderator team votes in your favor, then you get unbanned. For now, the moderator team votes will likely not count since most of the team is inactive, and only ~3 who I see engage in the community. However, this will likely change as Dean is planning to roll out more moderators soon.
By following these guidelines, you can increase your chances of a successful ban appeal. Remember, a well-crafted appeal demonstrates your understanding of the issue, your remorse, and your dedication to future positive behavior. - thx AI for conclusion

I am also thinking of adding an appeal section, similar to what .org has.
This thread will be temporarily stickied to gather info and get poll votes. Tell me your thoughts below!

Sounds good. So will a banned user still be able to see the forum just not interact ?
yup, they get temporary time to upload a thread but that is all

To be honest this wouldn't work for making a banned user "self reflect" about their actions since you are forcing them to apologize. Also it wouldn't matter how bad you break the rules, if you are popular, you are safe.
normal ban appeal section should be okay, no need to make a more complex system than that

It is their choice to return to the forum, they do not have to do all this and instead can remain banned
Also it wouldn't matter how bad you break the rules, if you are popular, you are safe.
True, which is why I added the moderator team voting. But yes I will have to figure something out for that.
I talked about the set dates, like for example someone who is banned sends me an appeal, so I tell them that a week from now they will get a chance to submit it publicly.
So they have a week where they remain banned. Or whatever other time, it could be 2 weeks, a month.
So they are still punished.
And if they do return, they will have harsher punishment
If they break a rule really bad like posting CP then there is no returning from that

What do you guys think of a curfew? Whenever any mod is active, they unban the user. Then when the mod leaves the forum to go to sleep or something, they reban that user. Another mod can also do it if the 1st mod is not active. This curfew system will be on for a while, like for the first month of unban.

What I meant is that if you want to stay in this forum and you got banned you can just write an apologize without being sorry only to get the unban, so it would be pointless

Makes sense, but it could make users hate mods

What I meant is that if you want to stay in this forum and you got banned you can just write an apologize without being sorry only to get the unban, so it would be pointless
i see
but if they are going to take a timed ban punishment and then reach out to me or some other mod to write it up then there is clearly effort and desperation
besides, there is nothing much i can do about liars
people lie a lot, i cannot devalue everyone's statements just because 1 of them might be lying
Makes sense, but it could make users hate mods
i see
i dont really care if a banned person hates me

Aristocracy is law🏛
the peasants will revolt
Not when self banned or perma p sure
they can
I'll buy you beer or cash app you 5$ also works surprisingly well I'd imagine
i dont have cashapp or any of those online money transaction applications, but thx : ]
mmmmmm you are sooo intelligent and creative sigma :3
thanks, love you 😘

I don't really get it though @sigma

People are given warnings, if they keep doing the same stuff then they get banned.

If they were sorry they would have stopped it in the first place.

WIth that being said, I'm open to changing my mind on this.

I understand, I feel like people should be able to have chances to try again but still be given harsh punishments and time to learn.
What about really long temporary bans? Surely they will learn their lesson, people change given a long period of time.
For example, at looksmax.org, I think they have a decent appeal system: https://looksmax.org/threads/read-first-how-to-appeal.20459/
"One unban chance for non-requested bans. The unban might or might not be accepted, depending on your appeal and the offense that permabanned you. If you use this chance and get permabanned again, you might or might not be allowed to appeal again; ask a mod.
One extraordinary unban chance to be used at least six months after an appeal of yours is denied. If your offense was severe (e.g., heavy trolling), you might not be given this chance. It never replenishes; you only get one."
As one may see, there is 1 unban chance, and then a special second unban chance after 6 months, so there is a 6 month ban punishment time.
We can make our own rules involving this with different time frames, whatever is seen fit. 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, anything your choosing, or make it custom per user.
Additionally I suggest a curfew system for unbanned users.
What do you guys think of a curfew? Whenever any mod is active, they unban the user. Then when the mod leaves the forum to go to sleep or something, they reban that user. Another mod can also do it if the 1st mod is not active. This curfew system will be on for a while, like for the first month of unban.
If this is too difficult to maintain, maybe there can be a feature, time limit?
I thought of this today when I was laying in bed, about how to successfully punish and reintegrate a new user following their unban.
This reduces the risk of bad behavior, and causes the user to evaluate their choices and what they want to put out there in the community. Also encourages accountability and deters bad behavior by showing the consequences (significantly less freedom on the forum). Also maybe days might be added, like they cannot message during the weekends or whatever time suits best.
Example: @user12345678910 can use the forum 1.5 hours a day, all days except for Friday and Saturday.
It can be reduced or increased over time depending on the behavior.
Ex: Like if the person is showing regression, it will be reduced to 45 minutes and only allowed on the forum on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday.
I'm not sure how long it would take to create a feature like this, my guess is a few days? Not sure, I have minimal coding experience, but I hope it's not a task that is too difficult.

TLDR:
-Temporary bans that are long, required for punishment prior to appeal submission.
-Limited access/auto time limit for punishment and monitoring.
-Or curfew, which may be more difficult to arrange and is manual.
Purpose is punishment while giving opportunities.

To be honest this wouldn't work for making a banned user "self reflect" about their actions since you are forcing them to apologize. Also it wouldn't matter how bad you break the rules, if you are popular, you are safe.

Im still 8 months banned on Org for something I didn’t do from a now 30 something year old, that also somehow got a mod position which still holds a grudge for again something I didn’t do. So over. Technoboss needs to grow up. I posted three ban appeal threads this week which I guarantee he personally deleted

Org admins are fat rotters no forum will work if it's made to attract those kind of users
