Please consider reading this whole thread, it took me a long time to write it and I put a lot of work into it.
Doki Doki literature club starts off as a dating sim with cute anime girls. At the end of the day you pick words for your poem which you present the next day, specific words appealing to different characters. Ddlc is labeled as a “psychological horror visual novel”. When reading that I thought it would just be manipulation because of how the character dynamics change based off what words you pick, but it was something much darker.
It was less of the story that devastated me but more the individual characters:
Sayori
I beat the game in one night and just thought to myself like what if I did rope before? There has been some nights I decided to do it but was too tired to so I never even attempted. Also on top of that its cute anime girls and I played this when I first started watching anime so it kinda fucked with my perception of all that.
Spoilers: do not read this thread if you haven’t played Doki Doki Literature Club and plan on playing it. If you’ve already played it, don’t plan on it, or already know what happens you’re free to read

Sayori
- Your cheerful childhood best friend
- Explains shes always late because shes depressed and has nothing to get up for in the morning
- She confesses she loves you and wether or not you accept or reject her she ends up hanging herself
- If you say yes she kills herself because she realizes a relationship won’t fix her mental problems
- If you say no she’s devastated and you’re what she cares about most
-
- Her fingers are bloody, indicating she either her instincts kicked in or she changed her mind when it was too late
- Her death made me especially sad because in a couple months ago I was living the same life and almost ended up like her
- Tall, attractive, shy, smart, and gentle
- In act 2 Natsuki warns you that Yuri self harms and Monika directly tells you, you should stay away from Yuri
- She then starts obsessing over you and reveals she touches herself with the pen she took from you
- She confesses and of course no matter what you pick she still stabs herself
- Saying yes overwhelms her by the intensity of her feelings
- Saying no probably also overwhelms her because of how devastated she was
-
- She kills herself when you are both alone on a friday so you are stuck with her decaying corpse for a week
-
- Short, cute, tsundere that loves manga and cooking
- She says that the club is the only place she feels safe
- She keeps her manga in the club room
- She has an abusive father leading to speculation that shes malnourished hence making her short
- While reading manga with her she admits her dad is abusive
-
- She seems the most normal but is nonetheless corrupt after Sayoris death
- Popular, smart, athletic, and hot
- Knows shes in a game
- She wants you not the main character
- Manipulates the other characters files which directly led to them being more emotional and 2 of them killing themselves
- Realizes what shes doing is wrong
