I hadn't noticed this pattern regarding movies. My suspicion was that the trend of gore spreading on the internet would be a form of posing mainly.

No, I don't think it's posing most people like harsh stuff. Their chimp brains chimp out when they see a brain for what it is.
 
Some people enjoy it, some tolerate it but don't find it satisfying and others find it repugnant.
