i read that they dated from 17 -> 24. That's all of their adulthood. You change somewhat in that time; especially future goals can shift. And if those don't align it is just impossible to live with someone.

When you have cancer, you're not really thinking in the long-term when it comes to the relationship -> it is way easier to stay together as both have a common goal; survive. After that happens, the earlier problems just don't disappear, btw.

And you probably know when people are near death, be it a very close relative/friend, or them almost dying. most of the time does change your outlook and what you want in life, and they become "brave" enough to actually change their lives
