why do people try to downplay any and all good traits of whatever person they dislike

“Society” or whatever, bases some of its roots on a false acceptance, something I would call as “associative range.”
At least commonly

Quality is the key word
Quality is hated

People are partially able to contain envy, fear or whatever towards accepted things like looks: too visible and impactful

Most people remain in their cognitively acceptable bubble (the range of wavelengths is variable), which means that anything outside these ranges will be unfairly labeled as “wrong”. They hate to make mistakes

Failure is ostracized because it means analyzing the mistake and working on it to improve it

rationality is unsupported, intelligence is barely tolerated (it depends), the only socially accepted forms of success are: fame given by drama (you can't qualitatively discuss drama)and sports fame (sports have an entertaining nature)

The underlying reasons are deeper
