It's completely normal not to be able to breath when doing it. Do it as hard as you can when you are able to still breathe. Sounds like you are doing it right
Not sure how old you are, but I genuinely have done mewing for quite some time now and it does help with over bite. My overbite initially went over all my teeth, but it no longer does that. I have never worn braces or had teeth pulled.
