How can someone live authentically if they’ve forgotten who they are or never knew in the first place?

Is it what we do that shapes our identity or how we portray ourselves to others?

Genuine question, it’s been on my mind for a while now

The mind is a powerful place. What the mind is fed is how it will eventually act. The thing is, our identity is defined by our choices as that's what life is for us, just choices. But in reality, are most real personality is how we act when nobody is watching us.

I wanted to talk about this for so long omg

i feel like the whole idea of “just be yourself” assumes that there’s a solid, knowable “self” that’s underneath all the layers of experiences that we accumulate over the years from society, trauma, our culture, and performance. but think, what if who we are IS exactly what we do every day, or how others perceive us??

a lot of other people claim that identity is discovered. or maybe it’s constructed, idk. but i feel like, maybe the way to live authentically isn’t to find some pure, base version of yourself, but to CHOOSE which parts of you that YOU wantto commit to.

what values, actions, or relationships that YOU decide align best with the person you want to be.

Being yourself might not mean going back to who you were before the world touched you. Maybe it means creating something real out of everything you’ve been through, everything that you’ve experienced in this life. Thats what makes us all different, and that’s what makes us all human

Makes sense tbh.

I just think the “just be yourself” advice is a bit cucked since no one really knows that solid “self” u were talking about

exactly there is no solid “self”. your “self” is built through time and experience. tbh, i’d like to argue that when we’re first born, we don’t actually have a self.

yk when you were little and you finally realized “oh god i just gained consciousness”? i feel like that’s the first step to building your “self”

Retarded, no uniqueness with people anymore. That's why i don't bother with most here
find the right people

a lot of people copy others because they feel as if that’s what they need to do to fit in. if you break down this mask, make them feel like they don’t have to wear it around you, you’ll be getting the un-copy and pasted version.

If that’s the case you won’t bother with most people in general. Normies are less introspective than people in these types of spaces.

I agree. It's how I personally live my life. I've spoken about it in the past, but I am proud of who I am, because I spent the time creating this version of myself. I took traits of myself I liked, spent time building upon them, and spent time unlearning and getting rid of traits I didn't like. It took a long time, but I'm confident of who I am now - because I spent the time creating him.
