Tretinoin is not available without prescription. Retinols are similar (lower grade retinoids) and are available over the counter, they're just not as strong. Also if you do ask your doctor about a tretinoin prescription, don't confuse it with isotretinoin, which is generally taken orally for a few months at a time, and is even more potent than tretinoin (probably more so than what you need for residual acne/scars).
