Bf thinks I shouldn't dye my hair. Advice?

Rundown:

Another update I guess. Initially wanted to dye my hair as a surprise to my bf but got paranoid and wanted to tell him first. So, I did. Said that I wanted to dye my hair purple. Immediately- he got aggravated with me and said that his friend currently has purple hair. Mind you this is a friend of his I am not fond of at all after hearing a ton of shit he did in the past. I do not talk to him nor bump into him nor associate with the guy. We just all go to the same college.

He basically said "you'll be matching," "I don't like the association," and "generally I do not like the color."

Ultimately- he said to do what I want and that he won't break up with me but he is going to create some distance from me and be around me less.

I was unaware that his friend even had colored hair and it's also a totally different shade I'm doing so it wouldn't even actually match.

What do I do?
