Book review: Crime and punishment

Title: Crime and punishment
Author: Fyodor Dostoevsky
Published: 1866
Genre: Psychological Fiction, Philosophical Novel
Summary

Crime and punishment tells the story of a man called Rodion Raskolnikov, a poor and smart university student living in St. Petersburg, Russia. In the story he struggles with poverty and ideas about morality and justice. He convinces himself that he has the right to commit a crime and this i say in the words of his own “for the greater good” but was it really? And what crime is it that he feels justice to commit? The short answer is murder. In the story he murders an old pawnbroker thinking that her death will help others. However after having committed the crime Raskalnikov is filled with overwhelming guilt and paranoia. The novel follows his psychological breakdown and consequences of his actions.

Themes

One of the central themes of the novel is guilt. Even though Raskolnikov tries to justify his actions he cannot escape the moral and emotional consequences. Another important theme is the idea of redemption and how suffering can lead to spiritual growth and in times forgiveness. The novel also explores mental health, and the struggle between good and evil inside every person.

Important Characters

  • Rodion Raskolnikov - A complex and conflicted protagonist who believes that some people are above moral laws

  • Sonia Marmeladov - A poor young women who becomes a symbol of compassion and faith

  • Porfiry Petrovich - The clever detective who suspects Raskolnikov but approaches him with psychological actions rather than force

Language

As most of you know, “crime and punishment” is a classic. That means that most of the time the language written will be a bit hard to understand, that applies for this book. There will come a lot of words that you won't understand but that's a good thing and will make your vocabulary broader. The pace of the book is also very slow where you spend a lot of the time in Raskolnikov's mind and get to know what he's thinking about and everything is in extreme detail. For this reason I would say the writing is almost like “naturalism” or well yes it is naturalism. The writing and detail and what the writing teaches you will almost a hundred percent broaden your mind.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Crime and Punishment is a powerful story about guilt, choices, mental illness and finding a way to make it right. Fyodor Dostoevsky takes us deep into Raskolnikov's life and mind, showing how hard it can be to live with a heavy conscience. It's a book about what's right and wrong, is there such a thing? Or is it just perhaps a thing we as humans came up with, Well we will most likely never know. This is a book that will leave you thinking for a long long time and the writing from Crime and Punishment will never really leave your mind.
