Previous studies have shown that male attractiveness can be enhanced by manipulation of status through, for example, the medium of costume. The present study experimentally manipulated status by seating the same target model (male and female matched for attractiveness) expressing identical facial expressions and posture in either a 'high status' (Silver Bentley Continental GT) or a 'neutral status' (Red Ford Fiesta ST) motor-car. A between-subjects design was used whereby the above photographic images were presented to male and female participants for attractiveness rating. Results showed that the male target model was rated as significantly more attractive on a rating scale of 1-10 when presented to female participants in the high compared to the neutral status context. Males were not influenced by status manipulation, as there was no significant difference between attractiveness ratings for the female seated in the high compared to the neutral condition. It would appear that despite a noticeable increase in female ownership of prestige/luxury cars over recent years males, unlike females remain oblivious to such cues in matters pertaining to opposite-sex attraction. These findings support the results of previous status enhancement of attractiveness studies especially those espousing sex differences in mate preferences are due to sex-specific adaptations.

I'm NOT burning my life savings to impress the huzz

i would only notice if a man owns a ferrari. or something around that level.
What this study is saying isn't "everyone notices." It's talking about average trends. The fact that you individually didn't notice anything other than the Ferrari doesn't disprove the general pattern it shows you're an exception.

The research examines how third parties perceive status signals, not why people have them. There is no claim regarding intention. Nobody is saying "people buy cars to impress women." The study measures the impact of ownership on perception, not intention.

genuinely this is true i identify men by what they drive and if a man leaves enough of an impression i think about him when i see the car he drives
it doesn’t necessarily have to do with how expensive the car is just how nicely kept it is i’d rather be in a clean, polished honda than a dirty bmw

Actually, what you're saying fits the core point of the study very well. Status isn't just about being "expensive" it's a signal related to order, care, and context. That's precisely why a clean Honda makes a more positive impression than a dirty BMW

it makes sense, but wouldn't you want a girl who doesn't care about that stuff?
People don't make judgments entirely independent of their social context. Signals like status or demeanor often shape first impressions. The real difference lies in whether these first impressions are tested against the person's character and behavior. For example, arriving in a clean and well-maintained car can be a positive initial signal however, this signal alone is meaningless if it's not supported by the person's consistency and communication
