I got braces on my lower jaw today and I'm wondering if this could make my overbite worse. Can traditional braces actually push the jaw backwards or are they just moving the teeth from their gums ?

by pulling the teeth back and inward, it pulls the maxilla downward with it, and the teeth doesn't look 90° anymore but instead 110°, so the mandible shifts into it's new position, which gives it the appearance of a recessed jaw.

yes its called retraction orthodontists but i dont think many practitioners do it anymore
