Hypergamy in men is more common actually. It's normalized for any bum to want an Instagram model, but women are declared shallow when they want someone actually good looking just for their looks and not any other socioeconomic factors.

In nature it's usually the ones with options that gets to pick and the ones that don't that tries to impress. We see it in birds, other mammals, etc., even in sea creatures. While we're way past our time as apes, I do think it just makes sense that's the way it's set up.

But I do think men try to impress women who aren't interested and it's a waste of their time. In general a relationship should be about proving your worth to each other in general and trying to impress each other, if it's one sided then it's usually understood for that to be the case, e.g., a rich man getting with a beautiful girl; neither really have to go out of their way to prove their worth to each other because they both understand what the arrangement is meant to be.

If you're just trying to have sex then all of the risk lies with the woman mainly and so it makes sense that she gets to pick.
