Introduction
Depression is a mental state of low mood and avoidance of activity; it affects a person's thoughts, behavior, and well-being, and the amount of joy they can derive from situations is reduced. Depression affects 3.5% of the global population (as of 2020). Depression can have multiple origins and can be a symptom of many disorders. Below, I selected the ones I thought would be more relatable to the majority of people on here.
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)
Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD)
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
Bipolar Depression (BD)

MDD

Major Depressive Disorder, otherwise known as clinical depression, is a mental disorder that is described by at least 2 weeks of a persistent low mood, low self-esteem, and loss of interest and pleasure from activities. Signs and symptoms include hopelessness, suicidal thoughts, self-harm, and self-doubt. Most of the time, this is due to a reduced ability to experience and express basic emotions as a neurological protective response. There obviously isn't one cause for clinical depression, but life events, personality traits, and substance use can influence it along with genes, which account for 40% of the risk, changes in hormone balance, and chronic illnesses.
PDD
Persistent Depressive Disorder, also known as Dysthymia and PDD, is usually regarded as a less severe version of MDD. PDD only typically lasts for 2 years in adults and a year in children. It has the same symptoms as MDD: low mood, low self-esteem, and loss of interest and pleasure from activities. Most people with PDD withdraw from activities out of fear of developing stress and/or failing. Unlike MDD, PDD has less of a genetic risk and is more influenced by the environment.
SAD
Seasonal Affective Disorder, also referred to as Seasonal depression, is a mental disorder subset in which people who typically display normal mental health and self-esteem start to exhibit depressive symptoms during the same time every year, which can be heavily impacted due to environmental changes. Common signs include sleeping too much, having little to no energy, and overeating. 20% of individuals with SAD report it resolving itself after 5-11 years, whilst 34-44 report it turning into MDD. Winter pattern SAD is the most common due to the lack of sunlight, social isolation, and more melatonin production. Spring and Summer pattern SAD is less common but can be influenced by sleep disruptions, heat and humidity, body image, isolation, and social pressures. Light therapy can be used to help ease symptoms of SAD, trying to mimic natural outdoor sunlight, which boosts brain chemicals and resets the body clock.
BD
Bipolar disorder, otherwise known as manic depression, is characterized by periods of depression and abnormally heightened mood lasting days to months. During mania, a person behaves and/or feels abnormally energetic, happy, or sensitive; this mania might lead to reckless decision making and sleep disturbance. During a depressive episode, a person might feel heavy, and waves of sadness, irritability, and anger wash over them. It is difficult for people with BD to be diagnosed properly and risk getting misdiagnosed with MDD. People with BD risk suicide 11.7 times greater than the population, and approximately 34% attempt suicide and 78% of adolescents with BD engage in self-harm.

Personal Notes
I could've done a bit better but this was just a quick thread before bed, I think I might try and do some actual research about one disorder and do a deeper dive maybe? Im not sure but I find doing these kinda fun and it's something I can do instead of doom scrolling!! I do still need to work on my vocab and wording a bit 😢 but yah im definitely gonna try and make way more threads like this i might try and do psychotic disorder idk idk idk anyways i go sleep
