my grandmother coped a lot with her mother using religion. she forced it upon a lot of our family members for decades and i was her only grandchild for a long time so i was the victim

I have a question for you. If God exists wouldn't he just be just a simple concept of virtue instead of a whole institution that strictly dictates what mankind does ?
no, the whole god/religion thing was never taught to me by my parents so I grew up not thinking about "god"
In my eyes God doesn't dictate man at all, we have free will. I see him less as a concept, to me He is a being. He guides but never forces.
What is this being made of is not skin and bones ? And if he truly guides us, why putting us in eternal torment if we don't follow his "recommendations" (that's guessing you're a Christian or follow any of the monotheistic religions).
I'm a Christian, I think Hell is very mischaracterized. God doesn't force us to follow him, and we're not necessarily 'punished' for it. Hell is simply a place that is absent of God.
Like this earth ? Where is God in our lives and I mean concretely ?
From how I see it God's presence is here on Earth due to the first coming of Jesus, who resurrected and exited to Heaven but left the Holy Spirit with us to be with us on Earth. Hell is devoid of the presence of any of the Holy Trinity.
What would a place without God be like ?

If God gave life, can't we presume its presence is in life and the way it grows and expands ?
