Understanding is a state of being we assign yo ourselves when we are confident in empirical or logical thought

Ex. People claiming they understand how ships stay afloat but do they know about the exact line of materials that can be used? Material for coating said material? Various optimizations engineers use for the system? The math for recreating a working large scale model?

They don't but with enough surface level knowledge they assign to themselves a state of being where they deem themselves to be able to understand some aspects of it. Entirely subjective and biased.
