The Madonna-whore complex is a psychological concept—first coined by Sigmund Freud—where a person (usually a heterosexual man) subconsciously categorizes women into two extreme, mutually exclusive groups:


• The "Madonna": Women viewed as pure, chaste, and respectable. He can deeply love and commit to them, but he cannot feel sexual desire for them.


• The "Whore": Women viewed as degraded or highly sexualized. He feels intense sexual lust for them, but he cannot love or respect them.

A person with this complex is unable to experience emotional love and sexual arousal with the same person. This often leads to sexless marriages with a "Madonna" while seeking sexual fulfillment from a "Whore" on the side, making a healthy, integrated romantic relationship impossible.
