First half of 2007 was one of the calmest and most optimistic period of the 2000s. The iPhone was released and post-9/11 paranoia had died down. The Iraq War remained controversial, with Bush announcing a "surge" of troops into Iraq to stabilise the country. Overall scandals were the biggest news story, with Britney Spears' breakdown being front page news and the disappearance of Madeline McCann being front page news in Europe
