Thread song
(chose this based on the weird rules we make for ourselves)
Disclaimer
This thread is to fulfill my own curiosity about certain mental disorders, and in no way am I trying to promote eating disorders. I intend to share interesting information and (I doubt) somehow encourage someone to try recovery. I've noticed a lot of people here show signs of disordered eating, so if this helps anyone, I'd be happy!
Introduction
Eating disorders are mental disorders characterized by abnormal eating habits, which might include eating large amounts of food, eating little to no food, and eating non-edible items. Eating disorders affect both physical and mental health. Disorders you would commonly see are:
Anorexia
Bulimia
BED (Binge Eating Disorder)
ARFID
Pica
OSFED
Anorexia
Bulimia
BED
ARFID
Pica
OSFED
Personal Notes
I dont really enjoy the bad rap people with eating disorders get all the time, so I just wanted to make a little thread about it. Its pretty annoying how eating disorders constantly get seen as a fake illnesses completely ignoring the mental and societal part of it. BUTTT I really hope someone out there enjoyed this thread a little at least and I did put a lot of effort into it. I might edit this or make a new thread tomorrow for those who do have restrictive eating disorders on refeeding syndrome, because i'm pretty sure not a lot of people know of it and its super dangerous and is preventable with proper reintroduction of food after fasting. I really hope everyone struggling can eventually recover before its too late and I love you all !!! (I RLLY TRIED WITH THIS OKAY DON'T JUDGE, and does anybody see what i did w the colors

Anorexia
Anorexia Nervosa, otherwise known as anorexia, is an eating disorder that results in extreme food restriction, body dysmorphia, and an intense desire to be thin. Signs and symptoms include weighing constantly, eating very small portions, and social withdrawal. Anorexia can also cause extreme deficiencies, Lanugo (fine downy hair that grows to attempt to keep the body warm), hair loss, fatigue, poor circulation (can cause blue fingertips), infertility, loss and irregular periods, digestive issues, and heart and blood issues. Anorexia typically develops at the ages 12-25, with 15-19 having the highest frequency. Anorexia also has the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses, being 5-6 times more likely to die prematurely, and has a risk of suicide 18x higher than people without it.
Bulimia
Bulimia Nervosa, simply known as bulimia, is an eating disorder which is known for binges (eating large amounts of food with loss of control) followed by compensatory behaviors, like fasting, self-induced vomiting, and long periods of exercise. Signs and symptoms of Bulimia include extreme fixation on consumed calories and weight, suicidal thoughts, use of laxatives and diet pills, frequent binges, excessive exercise, fatigue, extreme deficiencies, and infertility and irregular periods. Bulimia usually comes with a range of side effects depending on your method of purging. Self-induced vomiting can cause oral trauma, calluses on knuckles, swollen salivary glands, gastrointestinal problems, and acid erosion of teeth. Fasting can lead to refeeding syndrome when paired with the frequent binges, and excessive exercise can lead to severe physical strain. Bulimia is also heavily hereditary, having a rate of 54-83% if you have a close relative with it
BED
(This is the most common eating disorder yet the most stigmatized) Binge Eating Disorder, or shortened to BED, is an eating disorder that, when developed, causes frequent binge episodes, which are followed by a feeling of guilt and disgust in themselves. Signs and symptoms of BED are eating faster than others, eating to the point of discomfort, eating large amounts without hunger, eating alone and secretly, and feelings of guilt, disgust, and shame. Side effects include obesity, fatty liver disease, irregular periods, acid reflux, and heartburn. BED is typically more common in women and develops later than other disorders, typically at ages 16-26
ARFID
Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder, also known as ARFID, is an eating disorder that limits the variety and volume of food a person eats. Unlike the other disorders listed above, body image issues usually aren't the root of ARFID (despite it causing weight loss in most cases). Instead, the problem has to do with the texture, taste, smell, and look of certain foods. ARFID can look like both "extreme picky eating" and eating a variety of foods but having a very low appetite constantly. Sensory issues are the most common issue, though; smell, texture, color, taste, and temperature of some foods can be intolerable for people with ARFID. The limitation of their food (which is typically limited to highly processed food) leads to deficiencies and weight loss. ARFID can also be influenced by trauma with a certain food (such as choking or vomiting). ARFID is significantly more prevalent in individuals with autism, ADHD, OCD, and anxiety. Chicken nuggets, buttered pasta, and fries are very common safe foods.
Pica
Pica is the compulsive craving and/or consumption of non-edible items for over a month. Most people with Pica feel shame and embarrassment for their unusual eating habits. Most people report cravings such as chalk, paint, starch, dirt, clay, eggshells, rocks, etc. Pica can be triggered due to high stress and/or low nutrients. The body can send weird cravings when you lack iron or zinc, and it can be triggered by extreme anxiety or hunger. Like ARFID, pica is also common in individuals with autism, ADHD, OCD, anxiety, and BFRB (body-focused repetitive behaviors such as hair pulling)
OSFED
OSFED, formerly known as EDNOS, is an eating disorder that includes multiple signs of a variety of eating disorders but does not quite meet the criteria for a diagnosis. Disorders under the OSFED umbrella include:
Atypical anorexia nervosa - Anorexia without the underweight status
Atypical bulimia nervosa of low frequency and/or limited duration
Binge eating disorder of low frequency and/or limited duration
Purging disorder - A disorder where someone purges, but without the binge beforehand like bulimia
Night eating syndrome - eating large portions of food before bed or waking up in the middle of the night (25% or more of their daily food intake after dinner)
