It's not over for you underdevelopedcels. There's always a way to improve.
Implants are essentially a looksmaxxing shortcut. People will cope on and on for any type of increase in bone mass in the face, why not stop the cope and fix your problems with implants?
General knowledge
Facial implants are solid, biocompatible (not toxic to your body) structures usually made of medical grade silicone, titanium, or porous polyethylene (Medpor).
These are surgically inserted under the soft tissue but above the bone. For smaller implants, the surgeon essentially creates a small and tight pocket for the implant to sit in by lifting the periosteum (thin membrane covering the surface of the bones) and placing the implant between the periosteum and the bone (subperiosteal plane). Once the implant is in place, the periosteum and surrounding tissues are sutured back. The implant is kept secure by the natural tension.
For larger implants, the surgeon will usually fix the implant to the bone using titanium microscrews. If removal is needed, implants that are screw-fixed take longer to remove.
If the implant is made of Medpor, the body's tissue can grow into the pores, creating biological anchoring but making the implant harder to remove.
Insertion of the implants is usually done through the mouth (intraoral), especially for the implants done on the lower third. The advantage here is that there are no visible scars, the disadvantage is a higher risk of infection, because of mouth bacteria. Though insertion is also possible through the lower eyelid or hairline.
General risks
As with every surgical procedure, there are certain risks involved. I will be listing and describing them below.
-Hematoma: A Hematoma is a collection of blood outside the blood vessels. This will require drainage. Bleeding after surgery is the cause of a hematoma. A hematoma will appear as a swollen and bruised area.
-Seroma: Similar to a hematoma but instead of blood, the liquid is serous fluid; the clear or yellowish fluid that leaks from tissues during healing. This also requires drainage.
-Infection: An infection occurrs when bacteria enter the area around the implant and start multiplying. The risk of infection, like previously said, raises when the implant is inserted intraorally. For alloplastic implants (titanium, silicone) the infection rate was reported to range from 0.9% to 12.5%. For silicone implants, the infection rate has been reported to be as low as 1%. If an infection occurrs, the implant must be removed (if it persists despite antibiotic treatment).
-Scarring: usually minimal. Scarring won't matter when the implant is internally inserted, but when externally approached, the operation can leave small visible scars.
-Undesired aesthetic outcome: As with every surgery meant for improving aesthetics, it is possible that the patient is unhappy with the outcome. Implants may sit unevenly or shift slightly. The implant can also not match what the patient envisioned, including it's size or shape.
-Nerve injury: A known, but relatively uncommon complication. During implant placement, a nerve can be damaged. This can result in burning or electric sensations (dysesthesia), numbness (hypoesthesia), tingling sensation (paresthesia). The most commonly damaged nerve is the mental nerve during the placement of chin implants (occurrs in 2.4% of cases). If nerve injury happens, the implant may be removed or exchanged for a better fitting implant.
Types of implants
There are multiple types of implants. Below, I will be telling you more about some of them.
wraparound jaw implants
The placement of wraparound jaw implants are surgical procedures meant to enhance the appearance of the jawline. Most often men, want to create a larger and more defined jawline to seem more masculine. Wraparound jaw implants are extremely beneficial for people with an underdeveloped mandible. These implants wrap around the entire jaw, 'from ear to chin'. Note that wraparound jaw implants are always custom made.
The cost is said to be around 15000$ - 23000$.
"You’ll need plenty of rest after jaw implant surgery. You’ll probably feel mild pain for about a week after surgery. It can take several months for the swelling to go away completely. Until then, it may be hard to see your results. You should be able to resume light activities within a week of having jaw implant surgery. Follow your surgeon’s instructions about resuming more strenuous activities like strength training and lifting heavy items."
Stick to surgeon's instructions about pain medication and minimizing risks of infection by taking care of the incision.
chin implants
AKA mentoplasty or chin augmentation
Chin implants can be seen as 1 bit of wraparound jaw implants. These implants cover only the chin (as you could have guessed). If your chin is recessed, get chin implants. This procedure can increase chin projection, shape, height and width. The incision is made intraorally.AKA mentoplasty or chin augmentation
The cost ranges from 3000$ - 7000$. The chin implants are cheaper than wraparound jaw implants, seeing as they are essentially only a part.
preparing for recovery is important. Declutter your home, clean surfaces can help prevent infection, which delays the healing process. Stock up on soft foods. Prepare comfortable clothing that does not need to be pulled over your head with difficulty.
Pain and discomfort is expected after this surgery. Take pain medication as prescribed to manage the pain. Elevating your head while sleeping can minimize pain and discomfort. Sleeping on your back is also important.
After your chin surgery, you may need to follow a liquid diet, progressing to a soft food diet as per your surgeon’s advice. Include foods like:
-Puddings
-Soups
-Mashed fruits and vegetables
This soft diet relieves pressure on the chin and aids in recuperation.
Proper incision care is needed to prevent infection. Apply ointments as instructed.
After chin implants, it is essential to avoid strenous excercise for 1-2 weeks. As you approach 2-4 weeks post-surgery, reintroduce light and normal activity.
jaw angle implants
These implants are designed to augment to lower back corners of the jaw (gonions). They're used to give the jawline a wider or squarer appearance. The incision is made intraorally.
The cost varies from 3000$ to 7000$.
"How long does recovery take after a jaw angle augmentation?
After about two weeks, you will be fit to resume your daily activities. Swelling may persist for up to ten days. During the first four weeks, only soft foods should be consumed, and sporting activities should be avoided for six weeks."
As always, listen to your surgeon's instructions.
cheekbone implants (malar implants)
As the name says, these implants are meant to enhance the cheekbones. The incision is made intraorally. This procedure provides a permanent solution for flat or less defined cheeks.
Cheekbones are important to us looksmaxxers. Having thicker cheekbones makes the face look more structured. Prominent cheekbones are linked to a higher perceived attractiveness.
Cheek implants come in three types:
Submalar implants: Submalar refers to the beginning of your cheekbones, beneath your eyes. Your plastic surgeon places these implants above your cheekbones to improve a sunken appearance.
Malar implants: A malar implant — inserted below the submalar — creates an angular, more defined bone structure. This cheek implant is common among people in their 20s and 30s.
Combination: You can opt to have both a submalar and malar implant during one procedure to give your face definition and volume.
Costs, again, vary from 3000$ to 7000$.
"While everyone’s recovery is different, it generally takes several weeks to a month for redness and swelling to disappear. You should see the results of your cheek implants once the swelling goes away. You can usually return to work and your regular activities within a week of having cheek implant surgery. Your healthcare provider might suggest waiting several weeks before performing any strenuous activities, such as strength training or lifting heavy items."
infraorbital implants
I really wanted to include these, since there is tons of you crying about recessed infraorbitals. Infraorbital implants are meant to restore volume and provide support to the area beneath the eye. Underdeveloped infraorbitals can cause a tired look. The infraorbital rim forms the lower boundary of the eye socket and transitions into the upper cheek. The implant itself lies over the maxilla. Insertion can be done intraorally or through the lower eyelid.
While researching, I noted that patients often take canthoplasty and infraorbital implants. I could not find an image of a patient undergoing only infraorbital implants. Patient below had lower eyelid retraction surgery with canthoplasty plus infraorbital rim silicone implant.
Costs range from 6000$ to 15000$.
Recovery instructions include the usual. Apply ice compresses for up to 72 hours after the surgery. An eye ointment or drops will be prescribed for you. They should be used as directed. An ointment will be prescribed which is to be used at bedtime to prevent drying of the surface of your eyes. Eye lubricants may temporarily blur your vision. Get plenty of rest and don’t do anything requiring other than minimal exertion for two weeks following surgery. Avoid jogging, calisthenics, aerobics, weightlifting, sit-ups or other similar vigorous activities. Avoid bending over and avoid lifting. Do not drive for one week. Take pain medications as told.
Please notify me if I should add or remove something, correct a mistake etc. I also wanted to thank @Dean for welcoming me. I wish you a merry Christmas.
