I've never cut my hair before in my life, and recently I've been thinking that I want to get it cut before I go to uni this autumn. Because it's never been cut, my hair is really long, down almost to my knees (I may only be 5'1, but that's still pretty long), but I want to have it really short, like a pixie cut or something. My parents keep saying "oh, but it's so pretty!" and "but you look like a princess!" and stuff like that, and I think that I would miss it after having long hair for such a long time, but honestly it makes me really self-conscious when people mention it (which they always do) and I think I'd feel more like myself with short hair, if that makes sense. So, point is, does anyone have any advice concerning this? Some people say I shouldn't get it all cut off at once and should go in steps because I'll need to adjust, whereas, for example, my friend went from waist-length to pixie cut in one go and the hairdresser just wanted a photo for their portfolio. Any thoughts?
