I am an American TV and multimedia journalist living in Germany. My reporting career started early, covering sports news from my living room when I was ten years old. I later received a master’s degree from the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism and since then I have traveled the world covering stories.
I’ve profiled kidnapping victims in Colombia, reported on extreme tooth decay among children in El Salvador and produced a documentary about underground mosques in Athens. I’m also a fluent Spanish speaker and burrito aficionado.
What was your biggest challenge growing up?
My biggest challenge growing up was overcoming my shyness. I was an extremely quiet kid and I hated having my picture taken. Which makes working in TV and journalism an obvious choice later in life, right?!
How did you work things out?
My mother forced me to do things as a kid because I was too shy to pursue them. She literally threw me in the swimming pool so I could learn to swim. I was also lucky enough to travel when I was younger and that opened my eyes to the world.
Does life get easier the older you get?
In many ways it gets easier but in some ways it becomes much harder - paying bills, going to work - all that adult stuff. I definitely don’t want to be 16 years old again, but sometimes I wish I could dump all my responsibilities and escape to a beach somewhere.
