No longer nervous and shite
What is social inhibition?
This is the tendency to hold back and limit yourself in social situations because you are expecting judgement from others, it is the cause of feeling fear when you are with other people making you perform badly or strangely.
It is driven by anxiety around being other people making you self-conscious and possibly act unlike yourself when you are alone.
It is basically the voice inside your head which tells you to not talk to other people or interact with those you are not close to.
This is normal in all humans. It prevents acting out like committing crimes, however if it’s too strong it can make you become someone who no one talks to, who has no friends, and never gets any play.
No matter how good looking you are, if you're strange, awkward and painful to talk to, you will never achieve the life you want to live.
It makes people pin you as shy or nervous and makes you feel strange around other people like not being able to think or have a panic attack.
If you don't fix it your life will be filled with nothing. No new friends, no girlfriends and no good jobs. You will be a loser.
A high inhibition will raise your cortisol, increasing stress, blood pressure and lowering testosterone. Higher cortisol makes you uglier causing you unable to sleep and store more fat so here are ways to reduce your social inhibition to keep you from being that guy.
Short term usages (before events etc.)
Alcohol
It works by increasing GABA which calms your brain and turns down alertness and alertness. In addition, dopamine is also increased making you act better than you were sober possibly.
This causes words to flow easier, your brain won’t feel bland and you will not be stuck with nothing to say in important citations.
Alcohol also relaxes your facial muscles causing you to smile easier, preventing a tight look with clenched teeth or something which could make you look unapproachable, relaxed facial muscles also means it will feel easier to talk in situations. Instead of being the person who doesn't talk in the group and fades into the background who never ends up becoming something of their own you are more likely to just act easier.
However, it does have its limits and an excess of alcohol in your system can cause the prefrontal cortex to slow down. That may cause repetition of words or slurring them. Memory will also drop which is why after drinking you may struggle to recall previous events. This kind of defeats the purpose of doing well socially because it would be hard to follow up on if you can’t remember anything.
If you use alcohol to lower inhibition, eating beforehand reduces the risk of becoming overly drunk as well as having water accompany each drink you take.
Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium etc.)
Benzos act in practically the same way as alcohol in tablet form, they are better however because the dosages are exact, so the risk of ‘over drinking’ accidentally does not apply to this. They also do not have a strong taste like some alcohols may, so if you do not like taking alcohol due to the taste this is a much better alternative.
They also work by increasing the same GABA as alcohol does. Low doses of, for example, alprazolam or lorazepam can stop physical tension you may have in your body when in social situations such as shaky hands, voice or sweating. Also, it decreases your internal anxiety such as thoughts that people will laugh at you or that they are staring at you,
When these are used you will not feel any panic so you can speak freely to other people and act just as everyone else, possibly better if you take them before a setting. The pills are long lasting typically 4-8 hours so they would be able to last entire social events including school classes. It is also good because you would not need to redo during the events.
Downsides of taking these would be that it can cause withdrawal if you stop using them or if you abuse the use of them they may seem less effective which would cause you to increase dosages.
If you end up with withdrawal of these drugs it means that you could actually have more anxiety than previously, ruin sleep and may physically ache things such as your muscles. You should not mix these with alcohol, one or the other should be taken. It's advised to take only around 2 weekly and not stack two kinds of benzos together because they may interact and cause unwanted consequences. The smallest dosage should be taken so you are not accidentally going to cause an addiction and overdose.
Pregambin or Gamapetin
These were invented for epilepsy or nerve pain, but they also have benefits when used socially. They calm sections of your brain that cause overwhelming emotions. They lower the release of glutamate which can make you stress and feel like you are in danger when you are in social situations.
After you take these you will feel calm, as if you have had alcohol but without feeling like you’ve ‘drunk’ alcohol. Your memory will stay intact, and you will have clear thoughts. Everything will just feel better; you will be able to make jokes easily when people make jokes you will be able to react accordingly without having to think too hard about it. You can do simple things like retain eye contact without having severe anxiety about what the other person is thinking about you.
When you take these drugs they usually peak for around 1-2 hours and last 6-7 hours. They are also good in social settings because you will be able to drink at events instead of being the person who makes everyone else uncomfortable for not drinking. They are not metabolised by the liver so drinks will not cause some unwanted effect.
These drugs are seen as the most ‘comfortable’ and can be taken daily however if you are to stop taking them daily you may have side effects like anxiety and sleep issues, but that's only really if you are taking more than 300mg daily. It's best to stick to 150-300mg daily so you are not affected by other side effects which may be things such as weight gain and swollen ankles. And you are unlikely to get an awful withdrawal if you decide to stop taking them.
Propranolol
This is a beta-blocker; it stops adrenaline from making your heartbeat really fast in social settings accompanying physical things such as trembling voices and hands. You may still ‘feel’ anxious in the situations where you decide to take this because it does not change your thoughts internally or lower any brain chemicals, but when you are not worried about your shaking hands or voice it can reduce your internal anxiety regardless.
This is actually beneficial because when you take these drugs or drink you may be worried that what you originally planned to say does not end up being said or that you may act strangely without your brain registering it. But in the case that you take propranolol your memory, reaction time and stable speech will stay the same, you can still think as you would be able to normally.
Taking this before a speech, interview or date where you need to act calmly and be sure you are doing so is a good idea as you are still internally the same but come off more confident externally. The pill also lasts around 4 - 6 hours which means that you would not feel such ways permanently.
Downsides of taking this occur if you already have some other medial issue, for example if you have low blood pressure, the drug also reduces blood pressure this could cause fainting or being dizzy, making you actually not act like yourself. If you have asthma it can also cause reduced pressure in the lungs and can trigger bronchospasm.
The best thing about these drugs is that they are not addictive nor do they sedate you unless you are actually in an anxiety induced environment you won’t feel anything, when you are performing or presenting these are the safest drugs to take.
D-Cyclomerize
Originally used to treat tuberculosis it actually was found to increase learning. It does not have the same effect as the other drugs which will physically prevent your body or mind from producing high levels of certain chemicals, but in the long term they are actually very useful.
These work by making you just know to be less fearful; after doing something for the first time the positives of the interaction will feel stronger so the next time you partake in such you are able to act better and be more confident. Like if you speak to someone new, the next time you do you will be more relaxed about the ordeal.
Side effects of these are minimal; they may cause a headache or dizziness, but this is when taken at a low dose such as 50mg, when taken at higher doses like 100g you may start feeling as you would when you drink alcohol.
Longer term (Rewire the brain)
SSRIs (Prozac etc.)
They work by raising serotonin, over a couple of months your amygdala will become less active making you feel less anxious. Additionally, your pre-frontal cortex will also grow larger making you calmer, permanently. These would change how you act as a person completely. Instead of being that person who never speaks or participates in group activities, you could become the person who leads the group work. They work differently to other methods because the change would not be sudden; it would be over a period of time that the effects will come into place. They are not addictive drugs and are able to retain an effect even after you stop taking them. Originally it may cause a spike in anxiety but after a couple of weeks this will wear off and you will feel better.
Side effects can arise like a lower libido, but they are seen to improve after a few months. When you stop, if you do so suddenly, you may become dizzy or have mood swings so it’s best to wean off slowly.
SNRIs (Duloxetine etc.)
They act practically the same as SSRIs but additionally block norepinephrine uptake which is what causes drive and energy. Blocking the uptake means there is more in your system this would mean that if you experience social anxiety due to no energy or motivation to partake in social interactions like talking in a group setting causing you to be the one who says nothing, then the extra norepinephrine would mean increased motivation and energy to do these things instead of feeling like you are about to crash. The medication only takes full effect after a little more than a month of taking them.
The side effects are similar to SSRIs with the same sexual side effects, and it also can cause ‘discontinuation syndrome’ which is when if you miss a dose you may start to feel strangely like aching and emotional dysregulation. SNRIs are usually seen as a better version of SSRIs, unless you have high blood pressure because it can cause an increase.
MAOIs (Phenelzine etc.)
The drug works by attaching itself to an enzyme which would break down serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, causing an increase in all three of these brain chemicals. They are the most powerful everyday fix for high inhibition. Success rates for anxiety are extremely high even in patients where other drugs were ineffective. You would feel like a whole new better and improved person, social interactions will no longer phase you instead people will likely be looking at you to follow your lead due to the new attitude and behaviour it will elicit from you. The effect starts after two weeks and continues to improve over months that it is being taken.
However, the drug causes many limitations which you may have indulged in before taking them, you need to avoid:
- Aged Cheese
- Wine
- Beer
- Soy Sauce
- Processed meats
Low dose Ketamine
At low dosages using an Iv it is a fast-acting antidepressant making you more sociable. It causes an increase in glutamine which would trigger BDNF which causes your brain to be able to make new connections and learn new things. Only after around 4 hours you will feel the internal voice inside your head hating you go away. You will feel no anxiety when you partake in activities like calling people, presentations and such. These are done in clinics they are a few hundred pounds, and they should be taken over a few weeks to ensure the full effect takes place, you can also take it other ways though. It can cause dissociation and can damage your bladder.
Others:
Phenibut - Same effect as alcohol but lasts a whole dayKava - Natural GABA boost
Modafinil - Causes extra alertness which can reduce the feeling of fear
LSD - Makes conversations smoother
