this is what I do to define it but I always get confused

you can tell if a maxilla is "bad" or underdeveloped by looking at their side profile. if their face seems flat and all in one line, it's bad. for reference, if someone has a "good" or developed maxilla, they will have noticeable forward growth, and their jaw WONT be recessed. having a good maxilla benefits all other facial bones and features.
