the way people can look at themselves, whether it be in appearance, intelligence, etcetera, and be absolute in their certainty they are superior to others. Often with no basis whatsoever to come to that conclusion.

i don't say this solely from a place of negativity, as i dont think it can be (easily, anyway) helped, seemingly more-so the more extreme it is. but the delusion some people seem to have is genuinely astounding

maybe the ego exists because without it, many would collapse under introspection

i wonder what you think

I think the reason is social media induced perfectionism -> generation terrified of mediocrity so everyone thinks that he’s him
i agree this has likely perpetuated it in recent times, and definitely allowed individuals a platform to express their perceived superiority, however this existed beforehand

i doubt there is a reason it can be pinned to at all, insecurity is a part of the human condition

I've read that the ego is represented by a balance between selfishness (Id) and selflessness (superego). This is why you see some people who give a large portion of their wages to charity, and another looking for any chances for tax write-offs. There has to be a balance in the Id and superego, but nowadays, it is skewed towards selfishness. Capitalism thrives on selfishness, selfishness is rewarded in this world.

do you think it is a result of the environment we are subjected to or an inherent human trait to be more selfish than selfless?

things such as charity donations and the like are seen as selfless acts, but i think most of the time it is for nothing more than relieving oneself of guilt or some other negative feeling. that's why i do it anyway

It's an inherent trait to be more selfish, I totally agree. For example, two babies are given one chocolate bar to share, but baby A just gobbles it all up. It's a primal want for immediate pleasure, there is no thought of others.

Morality is only taught, there is no objectivity in this matter. The superego is your internalised moral compass which is constructed over time by your environment. So, if the son of the thief is taught to steal, he will see no wrong in doing so.

I was just looking for an example for my point, but yes, most people preform selfless acts to make themselves feel virtuous. It's like buddhism. You would rather the beggar to remain poor, so you can continue to give him charity, and score good karma points.

exactly, self-prioritisation is essentially the first thing any organism 'thinks' of in life. And back to the capitalism point, most of economics is based on the idea that the masses act rationally in their own self interest - whether they do is a different discussion but still, ironic

that's a great way of putting it.

i don't dispute the example at all, i think it is a great one to relate the id and ego, its just an interesting thing people do to portray themselves to others as a 'good' person, or even just to convince themself of the fact
