Stop asking Indian people why they look white.

A lot of times when I am on a discord video chat people would straight up say to me "Why do you look white?"/"You must have british ancestry from colonialism?"/"Are you 100% Indian or a half?". You have to be really ignorant and stupid to think that all Indians (this post will also hold true for other south asians as well) look the same. India is a very diverse subcontinent and ofc I wouldn't expect everyone to know everything about it but this question itself is very stereotypical and racist. Many of my Indian friends abroad tell me that they get asked "Do you have a white ancestor?" a lot of times. So I thought I would clear things up.
The gentics of India is often controversial and an area of complex research and a lot of politics is involved but I will try to give you an overview.
India is a country of mainly two linguistic groups. The Indo-Aryans (Note: This isn't the Hitler's Aryan race propaganda. If you want to know more ask in the comments) and the Dravidians. The Indo-Aryan speaking people form majority of the 1.4 billion people in the country whereas 230 million (About 19%) Dravidians are concentrated to the south of the country. Indo-Aryans are a people group descendant from Indo-Europeans (Most people in Europe speak Indo-European languages). Indo-Europeans started to migrate from the Pontic-Caspian Steppe to Europe, Iran and South Asia around 5000 years ago. Indo-Aryan population movements to India into the region from Central Asia are considered to have started around 4000 years ago as a slow diffusion which led to a language shift in the northern Indian subcontinent. They also brought Hinduism with them which is now practiced in most of the Indian sub-continent.
Now in layman terms they brought the Western Steppe Herder gene that is present in almost all Indo-Europeans or their descendants. But India already had a lot of people living here before they arrived. So the ancestry varies a lot. Most Indians have the WSH gene in them today tho the ancestry declines as you move from West to East and North to South (Which is obvious as they came in from northwestern India). This is the same for Europe where WSH ancestry peaks among Norwegians (ca. 50%). In South Asia for eg. it peaks in the Kalash people (ca. 50%) and Brahmins (A fucked up remnant of caste system. Basically that someone from a certain caste can't marry outside his/her caste and the upper caste people were usually the migrating Aryans who enforced this system to maintain this status quo and this also explains why fair skin in India remains a big deal to this day. Its not only because of India's colonial past contrary to the popular belief). Other than this India has small admixture from a lot of different groups throughout its history like from when Alexander (Macedonians/Greeks) invaded India, Parthians, Sythians, Huns etc. tho this is generally limited to the northwest. North and northeast for eg. have east Asian ancestry due to proximity to Tibet and Burma (so next time you meet an East Asian looking Indian you will know). As for how much the British are responsible for Indians looking white the answer is virtually none. Britishers really never bred much with Indians and the Anglo-Indian community is really small.
Climatic factors also play a role. Most of south India is in the tropical zone (above Equator and below tropic of cancer) and do experience a lot more direct sunlight which causes darker skin and most of north India lies in the Torrid zone (Above tropic of cancer) which is a lot more cooler.
These are the reason why a lot of Indians especially from the north looks white/have fair skin. Its a combination of genetics and climate. Please note this is not to say that skin colour matters or anything. India has many skintones. Its a huge place with a lot of diversity in language, ethnicity and culture and everyone no matter their skin colour have contributed to it in their own way. Caste system was outlawed basically since India became independent and the situation is improving rapidly with Indian government running several affirmative action schemes to completely uproot the practice. I am not an expert on this topic but I hope this have cleared misconceptions to atleast some extent. We have been living here for more than a few 1000 years so please next time be respectful. Asking questions on our background if you are genuinely intrigued is welcome just be respectful and don't judge.
