I saw Atesh Salih at a grocery store in London yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him or ask for a photo or anything. He looked at me and said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was kind of stunned, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off going “huh? huh? huh?” and snapping his fingers in front of my face. I just walked away and kept shopping, and as I turned the corner I heard him chuckle to himself.
When I got to the checkout to pay, I saw him trying to walk out the door with like fifteen Cadbury Flakes in his hands without paying. The lady at the till was super polite and just said, “Sir, you have to pay for those.” At first he pretended he didn’t hear her, just kept slowly blinking like he was exhausted, but then he turned back and handed her the chocolates.
When she started scanning one of them repeatedly, he stopped her and told her to scan each bar individually “to avoid magnetic friction overload,” then turned to me and winked. I don’t even think that’s a real phrase. And while she was scanning, he kept interrupting her with these loud, exaggerated yawns. It was unreal.
