No you can use whatever vpn you want idk where you get your information from. I went there, as a tourist I was using my own vpn no issue. I've also dated Chinese girl, she says the same thing. It's not a problem you can do most things as long as you don't talk bad on their government they realy don't care. No drugs, no govrnenet talk. It's a very safe country. More so then the west, it'd heavily survailanced yes but it's safe because of it.
