During Diocletian’s rule of the Roman Empire from 284 until 305, Christianity was condemned, with the demand of sacrifice to the Roman gods occurring simultaneously.
Sebastian, a Christian, joined the Roman army in 283 under Emperor Carinus to assist the martyrs. Under Diocletian and the co-emperor Maximian, he was appointed captain of the Praetorian Guard, while the emperors were unaware of his Christianity. Sebastian had prudently concealed his faith, until 286 where it was detected. Following this, he was sentenced to death, where he was restrained to a tree, before being pierced and wounded by several arrows. According to tradition, he had miraculously survived the injuries, found by Irene of Rome and nursed back to health. Despite the punishment he had received, he had then gone to Diocletian to warn him of his sins, in an attempt of revelation, which unfortunately led to his death.
Saint Sebastian’s tragedy reflects how societal expectations and ideals of honour can ultimately lead to destructive and fatal consequences. His adamant loyalty to Christianity and the teachings of God, despite the persecution of his faith, demonstrates the internal conflict between personal conviction and societal obligation, revealing the devastating consequences of unwavering loyalty despite the extreme pressure to conform.
