If god is real, why is it that not believing in him results in eternal damnation?

obviously the religious belief encompasses ALL people not just the ones who believe in it
but why do you need to be punished for a reasonable mistake
especially for eternity
if god walked up to me rn, did some magic and told me to become Christian I would, so he could easily save us and before "muhhh free will" all of this could just happen after my earthly life
but no where in the bible does it say any of that happens

obviously a religion encompasses everyone, that's not what the original post was about

he want to guide us

maybe?
That wouldn't be a good answer for the question
It's more asking why god causes us infinite punishment for a limited mistake

i used to believe in god but the reasoning for it was highkey stupid if you look at it in a bigger picture

live how you want man

Because it's not our life, it's just a test to see if we have faith, since faith requires believing without objective proof.

You already knew you shouldn't make those mistakes, and apparently God is already "forgiving".

and I'm not religious btw

But did we know not to make those mistakes?
There is literally zero evidence the Christian God is real
He's expecting and wanting people to believe in something with no evidence, and then punishing them when they get it wrong.
