interested in pursuing healthcare

hi everyone

i created this thread to see if anyone else wants to pursue a career in healthcare. next year i plan on getting my CNA since i will be 16, i hope to eventually get into med school
Same, plan to start EMT training too but eventually the dream is med school

aww that is nice! do you have a speciality in mind that you are interested in?
I was interested in psychiatry but after being through the system myself and thinking I don’t have the personality for it I reconsidered. I don’t know if I’d be up for a surgical specialty, plus I think I’d want something that is more medically necessary and urgent ig you could say, but I figured I’ll figure it out more in med school during rotations. I’ve been thinking about plastic surgery recently tho as I have an interest in it

I work as a CNA, got the job in February but I actually finish my certification process in July when I take my written exam. It'd depend on what kind of facility you go to though because some will require you to be certified before working (Mainly nursing homes).

At 16 I think being a CNA is not a bad choice, but it's a physically demanding job if you're not used to it. I recommend buying compression knee high socks and some Hoka shoes.

aww, just don't give up. i am kind of thinking about becoming a psychiatrist but i am not completely sure.

i am currently in highschool, working on my associates in psychology, and lots of people say it's useless or whatever but i don't really care because i plan to work in healthcare anyway. i just like studying psychology

thank you! i am thinking about working in home health since many of the CNA's at the hospital i volunteer at say they disliked working in nursing homes/skilled nursing facilities. would you recommend home health or no?

i live by emory, but theres no shot of me ever getting in there

Most likely no. I wouldn't be doing any private work at your age, I'm not sure if many places would accept you (if you're under a company, usually a matching service) or how liability insurance would work. For private work, there's always a risk of being trapped in a home or something happening to you. With how young you are I just simply wouldn't risk it until you're older.

For example, a few days ago I got choked out by a resident. But I yelled out and I had other CNAs nearby to help. I'm a grown man and this was an old lady. The risk is low and I'm sure companies have some vetting process but I just would hold off until you're 19 maybe.

Hospitals are more practical, they're more clean, they're more efficient, but they're a lot of patients. Usually you'd have a specialized role at that day in a hospital, e.g. being dedicated to solely readjusting people that day and someone else would do changing. But I don't know if all hospitals are like that, and you'd be doing floors of individuals.

The nursing homes I did my clinicals at were horrible - but it was because of the staff mainly not the labor. In nursing homes they have the lifts and shit and normally if a resident is too combative they'll relocate them, but I work in assisted living. Because we're not a nursing home, it means every transfer is manual- with my back and all.

I've actually really enjoyed working at an assisted living facility but, I think objectively the hospital would probably be the best option for you. What a lot of people in my cohort did was work as a sitter in the hospitals while they got certified so they could learn a lot at the hospital while learning the skills at school. Not a bad idea.

wow, very detailed! thank you.

honestly, i do not think a hospital would take me, since i reside in california and most hospitals do not hire 16 year olds due to liability issues.

the only two reason i am interested in being one is it being the only job in healthcare i can get around my age, and because i want experience. i am fine with changing patients and all that, i know it is exhausting, so i feel like i would not last for long, but i would love to try it out.

i have terrible grades, really really bad grades
are you in highschool? i had terrible grades so i just went online and now im doing college classes as hs classes (4.0).

however, if you want a social life, idk if this would be a nice option for you. thankfully, i have friends so i do not really worry about that

Then I would do assisted living maybe. You technically don't need to be certified to work there, at least not in my state, but it'd help.

You're 16 is a tough sell for a lot of facilities. If you were to do home aide then it should be be someone who's somehow connected to you, e.g. a family member or a family friend.

i kind of have some connections

i go to a russian/slavik church and there is lots of elderly people, many who have caregivers. so maybe i can ask around?

my state does not allow 16 yr olds to work in assisted living unfortuantely :(

Dropped out after my first year due to political reasons

Otherwise, medicine is very fun, especially organic chemistry and physiology modules
